Prototype molding of miniature components using low cost molds
An economical method for injection molding of small prototype thermoplastic components was developed by Monsanto Research Corporation component development engineers at Mound Laboratory, Miamisburg, Ohio. Mold cavity inserts for two small injection molding machines were used to produce a variety of miniature thermoplastic components. One inch and one-half inch diamiter mold inserts greatly reduced mold delivery time. This method of mold fabrication fulfills a need for low cost, low volume, small components when required in the development of products. Twelve different types of thermoplastics were successfully molded with the insert molds. A variety of small components with various shapes and cross sectional designs were successfully molded from thermoplastic injection moldable resins. (auth)
