Production of $sup 28$Mg by the use of electron linacs (in Japanese)
A 10- mu Ci yield of 21.3-hr /sup 26/Mg can be obtained by the /sup 30/ Si( gamma ,2 p) /sup 28/Mg reaction; where the gamma rays are produced by 55- MeV bremsstrahlung. Starting material was 400 mg of 99.9% pure natural metallic silicon. Irradiation was made with bremsstrahlung of E gamma max = 40 to 65 MeV at intervals of 5 MeV for approximates 2 hr each for various energy levels. The irradiated samples were left for 2 hr to allow short-lived by-products to decay. Measurement of the gamma -rays was made with a 33-cm/sup 3/ Ge(Li) detector. In the energy spectra thus obtained, 3 peaks of gamma -rays at 0.40, 0.95, and 1.35 MeV, and a peak at 1.78 MeV were observed. These are attributable, respectively, to the decay of /sup 28/Mg and /sup 28/Al, which is the daughter nucleus of the / sup 26/Mg. Maximum yield of the /sup 26/Mg was found at E gamma max = 85 MeV. The yield was 7 x 10/sup -1/ mu Ci per Si lg when lg of the sample was used. It is possible to produce about 10 mu Ci /sup 28/Mg if higher specific radioactivity is needed. (LK)
