Thesis. The energy loss of alpha -particles in thin, amorphous layers of tantalum pentoxide Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and niobium pentoxide was measured as a function of the particle energy in the range of 1.5 to 6 MeV. The layers were produced by anodic oxidation in aqueous electrolytes and were separated from the remaining metal layer by two different methods yielding equal results. To determine the stopping power of any element for alpha -particles considering also the ineffective electrons, a statistical model is presented which is based on a temporal mean va1ue of the single atomic states. The cross-sections for the stopping of alpha -particles can be determined for atomic charge distributions. The ineffectivity of more strongly bound electrons in interactions wiih slow alpha -particles and their influence on the stopping power are determined using the Thomas-Fermi atomic model and experimental results.
