Environmental status of the Lake Michigan region. Volume 7. Earthquake history and measurement with application to the Lake Michigan drainage basin

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4313639
Major risk areas of the United States (the 48 contiguous states) are defined, and a very brief inventory of a few of the major earthquakes that occurred or have otherwise been felt in the country is given. A review of the methods of measuring and categorizing seismic events is discussed, with the objective to correct any misunderstanding in regard to their meaning. Lake Michigan Drainage Basin seismicity is described, covering earthquakes with a maximum felt intensity as small as II. Earthquakes which have taken place outside of the Basin but were felt within it are tabulated also. Finally, a short section regarding theories of earthquake prediction is included. (auth)
