INVESTIGATION OF $mu$$sup -$-MESON DEPOLARIZATION IN LIQUID HYDROGEN

Angular distribution of electrons from mu /sup -/ meson decay in liquid hydrogen measured by a scintillation counter method was found to be isotropic within experimental error. Polarization of mu /sup -/ mesons in mcsic hydrogen determined from the results of an electron angular distribution was found to be (2.9 plus or minus 2.9)%. Thc total depolarization of mu /sup -/ mesons obscrvcd is mainly connectcd with a mechanism of jumping of a muon from one proton to another with simultaneous transition into the lower state of the hyperfinc structure. Due to this mechanism the transformation of orthohydrogen and parahydrogen molecules into each other is possible. (auth)
