An ultrasonic treatment capsule for high-temperature dispersion work was completed and filled with a UO/sub 2/--NaK slurry. Preliminary experiments on energy attenuation in this slurry suggested a maximum ultrasonic treatment depth of 1/2, inch. The ultrasonic coupler showed no evidence of cavitation erosion after a 1 1/2 hour run at 500 watts power input. Particle size evaluation indicated that the initial UO/sub 2/ particles having an average diameter of 8.5 mu were fractured to 5.8 mu by this treatment. It thercfore appeaes that this method is feasible for dispersion of loosely agglomerated flocs of UO/sub 2/ in NaK, which is accomplished more readily thnn particle breakup. Experiments directed toward ultrasonic agglomeration of Bi/sub 2/S/sub 3/ in Bi at frequencies of 75 kc and 300 kc prcduced agglomeration in one test at 75 kc, but the evidence was insufficient to cstablish this as an ultrasonic effect. Further work is planned. Ultrasonic application during precipitation of thorium oxalate from thorium nitrate and either solid or liquid oxalic acid produced a precipitate of fine, unagglomerated particles in the size range of 1 to 2 mu . Coalescence of 2% oil-inwater emulsions was prcduced by ultrasonic treatment in a specially designed 320 kc vessel. After 5 minutes of treatment, the emulsified oil content was reduced to fess than 0.1% at flow rates up to 105 ml/min. (For preceding period see NYO-7919.) (auth)
