The discussion of the behavior of the S-matrix is carried cut on the basis of the modern theory of entire analytic functions for S waves and for a spinless particle scattered by a fixed spherical potential. It is shown that many of the properties of Jost's f(k) functions can be derived quite rigorously and simply, from very general theorems. Among them we point cut a theorem on the existence of infinite zeros of f(k)when the potential decreases fast enough to make f(k) regular in the whole plane of k. The asymptotic behavior of the distribution of those zeros is also discussed. (auth)
