Emergency cooling system for a nuclear reactor

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4311795
Reference is made to emergency cooling systems for gascooled reactors and particularly reactors working with direct cycle gas turbines. In the system described the intermediate circuit is provided with a safety valve for permitting expulsion of water or vapour from the circuit in response to pressure exceeding a predetermined value, together with means for feeding water under pressure to the circuit to replace expelled water or vapour. The emergency water feeding means is connected so as to supply water to the intermediate circuit at a point upstream of the heat exchange means associated with the main coolant, with the safety valve downstream. The intermediate circuit forms a closed path incorporating the heat exchange means and the safety valve, and around which water is circulated to cool the main coolant in normal operation of the system, with a non-return valve located in the closed path.
