The ethylenediaminetetraacetate and the 1,2- diaminocyclohexanetetraacetate chelates of Th(IV) were found to form binuclear diolate chelates in aqueous solution. Through measurement of the influence of concentration on the potentiometric titratlon curves, the acid dissociation constants of the normal chelate compounds and tbe dimerization constants of the hydrolysis products were determined. The Th(IV) chelate of heptadentate or octadentate diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid forms a completely coordinated, monohydroxo chelate which shows no tendency to form polynuclear substances.
