NOTE ON THE ELECTRON CAPTURE DECAY OF $sup 121$Tem
Pure tellurium was chemically separated from a sample of deuteron- irradiated metallic antimony, The gamma -ray spectrum of the tellurium fraction was studied in a scintillation spectrometer for a period of over eight weeks. It was found that whereas the 575 kev gamma -ray activity decayed with a half life of about 17 days, the 1130 kev gamma -ray intensity decayed with a much longer half life. An examination of the systematics of the occurrence of the d/sub 5/2/ and the g, levels in the isotopes of Sb, Te, and I shows that a g/sub 7/2/ level in Sb/sup 121/ should lie a little above the ground state d/sub 5/2/ level. It seems that the 70 kev gamma ray found in the decay of Te/sup 121/ arises from a level at about 70 kev above the ground state. Results indicate that these studies are not inconsistent with the assumption that the 506 kev gamma -ray originates in a transitton from the 575 kev to the 70 kev level. It was found that the log ft value is about 8 for the decay energy involved in the 5% electron capture decay branching of Te/sup 121/. (J.H.M.)
