Clean energy from coal technology

Book ·
OSTI ID:4310666
The United States, with 6% of the world's population, consumes about 33% of its commercial energy supply. The demand for all fossil fuels combined is expected to double by 2000. Coal will be expected to play an important role to meet this need to reduce the requirements for imported supplies of gas and oil. The conversion of massive coal reserves to clean-burning pipeline gas is discussed. Research sponsored by the Interior's Office of Coal Research is discussed for high-Btu pipeline gas technology and pilot plants on the HYGAS (fluid bed), CO/sub 2/ Acceptor, BI-- GAS (entrained bed), and SYNTHANE (fluid bed) processes. The low-Btu fael gas processes being investigated include the fluidized-bed gasifier and the entrained-bed gasifier. The low-sulfur fuel oil processes include extract hydrogenation, ebullated-bed hydrogeration, fixed-bed hydrogeration, and carbonization. The solvent refined coal method of extraction is described.
