Translated from Ogneupory; 14: No. 4, 42-45(Apr 1973). With combined additives (Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ + Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/), zirconium dio xide forms solid solutions which resist thermal decomposition. A material was synthesized containing from 90 to 93 mol% ZrO/sub 2/, from 3.5 to 5 mol% Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and from 3.5 to 5% mol Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, possessing an average coefficient of thermal expansion which is lower, and a thermalshock resistance which is higher, than the double solid solutions in the systems ZrO/sub 2/-Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and ZrO/sub 2/-CaO.
