During the last twenty years efforts have been made to develop solid state radiographic converters which could replace the fluoroscopic screen or radiographic film used in radiography. The working principles and present state of development of the two main kinds radiographic converter screens, the radiographic amplifier screen (R.A.S.) and the radiographic storage screen (R.S.S.), are described. The operating characteristics of the R.A.S. are compared with those of the fluoroscopic screen and the x-ray intensifier tube. Those of the R.S.S. are compared with Kodak type M radiographic film. It is concluded that R.A.S.'s most objectionabie characteristic is its slow response which makes it unusable for detecting fast moving objects. However, it is light weight, easy to operate, and has better resolution, contrast, and brightness characteristics than the fluoroscopic screen or image intensifier tube. The great advantage of the R.S.S. over the photographic film is that the image can be seen during exposure so the operator can change the contrast to assure a satisfactory image. Possible uses of these radiographic converters in medical, industrial and military fields are listed. (LCL)
