Absorption spectra of water and alcohol solutions of ferric perchlorate, and curves showing the change in optical density upon addition of water to an alcoholic iron perchdorate solution are presented to support the hypothesis that the colored species of ferric perchlorate is a ferric hydrolysis product, with its color intensified by the substitution of organic molecules for waters in the solvation sphere.
