Backbending and rotation alignment

Journal Article · · Nucl. Phys., A, v. A222, no. 2, pp. 235-251
The Z and N dependence of backbending in the rare-earth region was examined as given by a model based on the rotation aligment of two i/sub 13/2/ neutrons. The important parameters in this model are the rotational moment of inertia, the position of the Fermi surface, and the deformation (both quadrupole and hexadecapole). To fix these (and other) parameters most reliably, a comparison with the observed rotation alignment of a single i/sub 13/2/ neutron in the adjacent odd-A nuclei is proposed. This comparison is made qualitatively throughout the rareearth region, and then quantitatively for the two pairs, /sup 161/Er, /sup 162/Er and /sup 171/Hf, /sup 172/Hf. Based on these comparisons it seems plausible that all the backbendings so far observed in the rareearth region could be due to such rotation alignment. (auth)
