Magnetic properties of Ln$sub 3$In intermetallic compounds

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem., v. 9, no. 2, pp. 152-154
Results of magnetic studies of Ln/sub 3/In phases (Ln = Pr, Nd, Gd, Dy, and Er) are presented. All materials exhibited Curie --Weiss behavior in the paramagnetic regions with effective moments approximating gSTAJ(J + 1)!/sup 1/2/ for the tripositive ion. Positive Weiss constants were observed indicating predominence of ferromagnetic exchange. Pr/sub 3/In and Nd/sub 3/In order ferromagnetically at 62 and 114 deg K, respectively. However, the ordered moment is less than 10% of gJ. Dy/sub 3/In and Er/sub 3/In also seem to order ferromagnetically, but with low moments compared to gJ. Gd/sub 3/In exhibits metamagnetic behavior with a critical field of about 5 kOe. Neutron diffraction measurements on Nd/sub 3/In indicate that it is ferromagnetic and confirm the low Nd/sup 3+/ moment. (auth)
