Photofission cross sections were estimated for /sup 209/Bi, /sup 232/Th and /sup 238/U, in the energy range from 0.15 GeV up to 2 GeV, by using flssility values computed with the Monte Carlo Method. For the calculation of the fissilities, use was made of some already known results of proton-induced intranuclear cascade calculations, in order to obtain information about mass- number, atomic-number, and excitation-energy distributions of the post-cascade nucleus. The calculation was carried out as a fission-evaporation competition, by using an energy dependence of the ratio of the neutron evaporation width to fission width. The results were compared with experimental data, and the comparison showed that the photofission cross sections are consistent with the photomeson mechanism of nuclear excitation.
