The effect of Al, Mo, and V content on tensile and shear strength is investigated on annealed and quenched aged alloys which contained 0.8 to 3% Al, 1.8 to 5.5% Mo, and 2 to 6.0% V. The data were treated statistically to determine optimum strength properties of the alloy as a function of composition of alloying elements and thermal treatment of the alloy. For the preparation of reinforced articles which must operate with resistance to shear, it is recommended that the alloy have the following average composition: 2.0% Al, 6.5% Mo, 4.0% V, rest titanium or 3.5% Al, 5.0% Mo, 4% V, rest titanium. These alloys in the annealed state have a shear strength of 64 kg/m/sup 2/ with a plasticity of >60%. For articles operating under tensile stress, an alloy of the following composition is recommended: 2.5% Al, 4.5% Mo, 4.5% V. This alloy is strengthened thermally by annealing 2 h at 780 deg C, and quenching 2 h in water, and aging 8 h at 57O deg C. This alloy has a tensile strength of>110 kg/mm/sup 2/ with a plasticity of 60%. For articles with a tensile strength of>125 kg/mm/sup 2/ and a plasticity of 55- 58%, this alloy should be quenched 1 h from 780 deg C in water and aged 16 h at 500 deg C. (SJR)
