POLARIZATION OF PROTONS FROM (d,p) REACTIONS ON C$sup 12$ AND Si$sup 2$$sup 8$

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The polarization of five proton groups from the reactions C/sup 12/ (d,p)C/sup 13/ and Si/sup 28/(d,p)Si/sup 29/ has been measured at several proton angles at a deuteron energy of 11.9 Mev. In the case of the carbon ground-state group, the sign of the polarization agrees with the measurement of Hillman using 4.05-Mev deuterons and with the calculations of Cheston for 3.29-Mev deuterons. The largest value of the polarization was measured for the carbon ground-state group, with the value --0.49 plus or minus 0.13 at a proton angle of 69.0 deg . At small proton angles there is for the 1/sub n/ = 1 proton groups a consistent correlation between the sign of the polarization and the relative orientation of the spin of the captured neutron and its orbital angular momentum. (auth) Angular distributions obtained for each member of the ground-state doublet of P/ sup 32/ in the reactlon P/sup 31/(d,p)P/sup 32/ indicate that for both levels the neutron is captured with 1/sub n/ = 2, and that the s-wave admixture for the ground state is about 5%. Estimates of the purity of the P/sup 31/ ground-state wave function are made on the basis of the available experimental data. (auth)
