RECOVERY OF THORIUM FROM MONAZITE

Journal Article · · Nuclear Eng.
OSTI ID:4307777

The monazite is digested with strong sulfuric acid at elevated temperature. The pasty mass obtained is cooled and added to a large volume of wiiter, the temperature being kept below 30 deg C. The mixture is then filtered and the filtrate heated to about 45 deg C and treated with ammonia solution to precipitate light rare earth metal double sulfates. The resulting mixture is again filtered, the filtrate then containing the greater part of the thorium. (auth)
