The decomposition potentials of K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/ and Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ were determined in molten mixtures of KF and KCl. The melt was maintained at a temperature of 850 0 deg C. The decomposition potential for K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/ is 1.65 v; the addition of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ raised the potential to 2.56 v. A method for the production of metallic, powdery nioblum by the electrolysis of of molten salts is described. The melt consists of KF, KCl, K/sub 2/NbF/sub 7/, and freshly precipitated Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/. The Nb produced has high purity with only 0.01% Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ at most. (J.S.R.)
