TRANSFORMATION KINETICS OF PLUTONIUM

The transformation kinetics of the alpha, beta, gamma, and delta phases of plutonium were determined using density measurements. Isothermal reaction curves of metastable beta, gamma, and delta were obtained and the time- temperature-transformation curves were sketched. The rate of transformation of alpha in the beta temperature range was determined. The temperature of the maximum rate of transformation of beta was betwcen 0 and --20 deg C. The reaction was quite sluggish above 80 deg C. Increasing the amount of normal impurities decrcases the rate of transformation and shifts the T-T-T- curves to the right. (auth)
