A description of the seed is presented. The standard instrumented, and source clusters are discussed and the method of forming the cruciform-shaped control rod channel is described. Manufacturing methods used in the production of the seed clusters are discussed. A description is given of the melting of the fuel alloy, together with the composition and fabrication of fuel plates. This includes both non-consumable and consumable electrode arc-melting techniques. The operations performed in cladding the fuel plates witha Zircaloy2 to provide corrosion resistance are described. The joining of the 1-beam shaped fuel elements into 2 1/2 in. square subassemblies by fusion welding techniques is discussed. Finally, the formation of clusters of the subassemblies is described together with the accompanying heat treating, machining, inspection and testing operations. (acth)
