Leaching tests were performed to investigate the feasibility of solidifying pentachlorophenol (PCP) in Portland cement. The PCP in the leachate was measured with a gas chromatograph. Test results indicate that the percentage extraction is low for PCP in cement, and lower when organo-clay is mixed with cement. The compressive strength of the block is reduced by the clay, but will be above the minimum required for safe storage. The stabilization of PCP by solidification in Portland cement and organo-clay is both environmentally and economically viable, particularly if the organo-clay is derived from fatty acids. 7 refs., 2 tabs.
