As models suggested to explain the coercivity of RCo/sub 5/ particles have included nucleation and pinning of domains at crystal defects, transmission electron microscopy was used to observe defects and magnetic domain walls in foils of SmCo/sub 5/ and other RCo/sub 5/ compounds. The general microstructure of the cast compounds have been described and some pinning events were observed. The nonsmoothness of domain wall movement observed in thicker foils during magnetization gives some support for general pinning processes occurring but stronger local pinning is also in evidence.
