Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the only economically acceptable way to exploit thin deep seams such as those situated in Western Europe. The implementation of the process would enable Europe to exploit its coal reserve and to maintain energetic independency at a certain level. A five-year demonstration programme of Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is in progress at Alcorisa (Spain) supported by the Commission of the European Communities; organizations in Spain, Belgium and United Kingdom are partners in the project. In the first step of the project, gasification will be carried out along a horizontal channel, drilled in seam at 600 m depth from a vertical-start deviated well. The gasifying agents will be injected via the deviated in-seam well and gasification products will be recovered via a vertical well. 8 refs., 7 figs., 1 tab.
