SO{sub 2} removal based on its catalytic oxidation over suspended powdered activated carbon in sulfuric acid solutions has been carried out in an upflow co-current slurry column packed with SMV static mixers. The gas hold-up has been measured and correlated as a function of the gas and liquid flow rates, the catalyst loading and the nature of the liquid phase. The sulfur dioxide yield has been measured with the gas and liquid flow rates, the SO{sub 2} partial pressure, the sulfuric acid concentration as operating parameters. The obtained efficiencies are very attractive compared to trickle-bed reactors data available in the literature. 8 refs., 3 figs.
