AN EXPERIMENTAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE TRANSITION FROM LAMINAR TO TURBULENT FLOW IN A PIPE

Journal Article · · IXe Congr. intern. Mecan. Appl.
OSTI ID:4303403

Experiments were made with air and with water, with the flow at Reynolds numbers slightly higher thn the critical value, to determine whether turbulent flow will still intermittently occur if the fluctuations in the rate of discharge were prevented by some means. An expression for the critical Reynolds number for pipe flow. below which turbulent pipe flow will not occur, was denived on the basis of the experiments. (J.S.R.)
