Low rank coals such as brown coal and lignite are most abundant fossil resources, but they have not been utilized in a large amount because of their low calorific values. They will not be utilized widely without some method that merits the utilization of such coals. Production of valuable chemicals, such as fatty acids via liquid phase oxidation may be a possible way to utilize the coals, judging from their structure. This paper describes the liquid phase oxidation of brown coal with hydrogen peroxide under mild conditions.
