Preliminary results of measurements of air radioactivity by the Belgian Aatarctic Expedition at Base Roi Baudouin (70 26' S and 24 19' E, about 10 km from the sea) since February 1958 are given. The air was collected 10 m above the ground and drawn at a known rate through a filter which retained particles above 0.5 mu m. The alpha and beta activity of the filters was measured during and after use. Beta activity (artificial radioelemests) ranged from approximates 1 x 10/sup -14/to 4 x 10/sup -14/ counts/m/sup 3/, the average being 2 x 10/sup -14/. No correlation with meteorological conditions was observed. The beta activity of half life greater than 10 days was atiributed to fission products. Alpha activity (natural radioelements) from ThB and RaB was measured, the latter being considered as in equilibrium with atmospheric Rn. An alpha activity with a half life of over 10 days was detected, probably Po. The results reponted are: RaB < 10/sup -12/c/m/sup 3/; ThB < 5 x 10/sup -14/c/m/sup 3/ ; and Po < 10/sup -16/c/m/sup 2/. The RaB and ThB values are considered as upper limits because of possible contaminntion from the insides of the base buildings where activities of 10/sup -11/ c/m/sup 2/ and 4 x 10/sup -12/ c/m/sup 3/ were found for RaB and ThB. No indication of elements with long half lives was found. (T.R.H.)
