The hearings were conducted to assist members of the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs of the U. S. Senate to understand the issues inherent in the formulation of a long-term national energy policy that assures the continued welfare of the nation, including balanced growth, safeguarding and enhancing the quality of the environment, and nationai security. Statemerts were heard from university personnel, federal and state senators, utiiity personnel, environmental agencies, and many other contributors. Natural gas, tar sands, synthetic fuels, and nuclear power are discussed as options. Environmental considerations will be the key to the determination of the role of coal in the future energy supply pattern. Communications sent to industrial organizations by U. S. senators are published in which the companies were asked to submit views on coal policy issues. (MCW)
