OBSERVATION OF A $pi$$sup 0$-MESONIC DECAY OF A HELIUM HYPERNUCLEUS

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The observation of a hypernucleus decaying into an electron pair, a recoil, and one or more neutral particles, is reported here. The event was produced by a Kcapture in emulsion. The charge of the hypernucleus was determined as Z = 2. The most probable interpretation of this unusual event is the reaction LAMBDA He/sup 4/ yields /sup p/ + He/sup 4/. However, LAMBDA He/sup 4.5/ yields pi /sup o. + N + He/sup 3.4/cannot be rul ed out, since a reliable determination of the energy of the electrons at emission cannot be made. (auth)
