The frequency of the direct production of electron pairs (the so-called triple forks or tridents) and the energy spectra of the originating electrons were measured in nuclear emulsions. Electrons artificially accelerated to 800 plus or minus 50 Mev were used as primary particles. The total and differential effective cross sections for the direct pair production, determined from the measurements, are compared with the results of the Bhabha theory. It is shown that the theory described the measurements satisfactorily. (tr-auth)
