Title: Environmental monitoring report, period covering August 1, 1973 thru December 8, 1973 for El Paso Natural Gas Company: Project Wagon Wheel

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4299598

Results from the Radiation Monitoring Program conducted during August to December 1973 for Project Wagon Wheel are presented. Beta radioactivity in air partculates ranged from 0.02 to 0.05 pCi/m/sup 3/. These levels are consistent with those for the previous quarters and indicate lower levels of worldwide fallout. Concentrations of gamma emitters were too low to measure by NaI(Tl) gamma spectrometry. TLD data for the period of July 8, 1973 to December 3, 1973 averaged 2.3 mrem/week. This is within the range of other measurements made at this site since 1971. Gross beta measurements in surface, municipal, and well water ranged from less than 2 to 7.8 pCi/l. Gross beta in precipitation was 0.4 plus or minus 0.1 nCi/m/sup 2/. The tritium concentration in airborne moisture, surface water, municipal, and well water was less than 1 pCi/ml by liquid scintillation counting. Surface and well water tritium content measured by gas counting averaged 0.7 pCi/ml with the highest level being 1.4 pCi/ml for Meadow Lake. The concentrations of /sup 90/Sr in vegetation ranged from 0.1 to 0.4 pCi/ g (dry weight). The tritium concentrations in water recovered by distillation was less than 1 pCi/ml. No gamma emitters other than natural potassium were detected. The tritium concentration in water recovered by distillation from animals and fish was less than 1 pCi/ml. No gamma emitters other than potassium were detected. The concentration of /sup 90/Sr in milk ranged from 2.5 to 12.4 pCi/l. The concentration of tritium measured was less than 1 pCi/ml. No gamma emitters other than natural /sup 40/K were defected. The concentration of tritium in urine was less than 2 pCi/ ml. None of the results obtained during the period differed significantly from expected levels. (auth)
