POLAROGRAPHY OF EUROPIUM AND YTTERBIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4299171
The polarographic determinntion of individual rare earths in a mixture of these elements, in most cases is difficult, if not impossible, because most of the rare earths are reduced at approximately the same potential and interfere with each other. However, europium and ytterbium are reduced at more positive potentials and can be determined without interference from each other or from the other rare earths. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the polarographic behavior of europium and ytterbium in several different supporting electrolytes. This investigation was carried out with lithium chloride, ammonium chloride, and tetramethyl ammonium bromide. The wave characteristics and data for diffusion-current constants were determined for europium and ytterbium in these supporting electroytes. (auth)
