Reactions of the oxides of vanadium with liquid potassium

The reactions of the oxides V/sub 2/O/sub 5/, V/sub 2/O/sub 3/, V0/sub 2/ , and VO with liquid potassium were studied at temperatures up to 400 deg C. The oxides V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and VO/sub 2/ react at 63 deg C (the mp of potassium); V/ s ub 2/O/sub 3/ at 180 deg C; and VO was found not to react at up to 400 deg C. The new compound KVO/sub 2/ was identified as the only reaction product of the dioxide VO/sub 2/ with liquid potassium. The pentoxide V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and the oxide V/sub 2/O/sub 3/ gave the oxides VO and KVO/sub 2/ as reaction products, but both these compounds were found to oxidise to the teruary oxide K/sub 3/VO/ sub 4/ in the presence of dissolved oxygen in the liquid metal. The behavior of liquid potassium towards the oxides of vanadium is compared with the other alkali metals, lithium and sodium. (auth)
