Using a cascaded bank of heat exchangers operating at high, medium, and low pressures a variable load can be supplied from a reactor plant. The coolant passes through them from high to low pressure and if the demanded load falls below the reactor output, steam is discharged through the boilers progressively and finally from the l.p. side to the condcnser. If the required load exceeds output, steam from an auxiliary furnace is brought into the turbine. The temperature of the coolant may be controlled either by bypassing feed water past the low pressure economizer or varying the pressure in the low pressure boiler.
