Time resolved Li beam divergence studies on PBFAII
- Sandia National Labs., Albuquerque, NM (United States)
The time variation of the focus and energy-momentum correlation (E-P) of the Li beam from a 15-cm-radius radial applied-B-ion diode on PBFAII is examined as a function of diode parameters in an attempt to separate the effects of source divergence and electron sheath instabilities on the focus. The diode used LiF anodes to generate 6 TW, 10 MeV Li beams. The focus was observed on a time resolved basis with an ion pinhole camera using 27 PIN diode detectors. The E-P correlation was measured with a magnetic spectrometer that spatially imaged the horizontal profile of the beam with CR39 track recording film and used 30 PIN diodes to time resolve the Li beam energy and energy spread at 0 and {+-}4.5 mm from the center of the diode. The lifetime of virtual cathode electrons was set by the magnetic insulation in the feed near the diode with an anode coil located 10 cm from the midplane. The magnetic well formed by this coil varied from 1.8 to 15 MeV and resulted in a factor-of-two increase in ion current density when it was increased from 1.8 to 6 MeV with minimal increases for wells > 6 MeV. The size of the EP correlation and Li energy spread was generally larger for deeper wells and both increased sharply when the beam voltage began to drop during the beam pulse.
