Collective Motion in Nuclei

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4298178· OSTI ID:4298178
A compilation from notes taken at a series of lectures delivered by Dr. J. P. Elliott at the Univ. of Rochester is presented. The coupling of angular momenta, the properties of rotation operators. and the algebra of spherical tensor operators are discussed concisely and mathematically. No explicit use is made of the theory of group-representations. Both rotational and vibrational modes arc studied, although more emphasis is placed on the former. The desired form of the nuclear Hamiltonian is assumed initially, leaving the parameters involved for empirical evaluation.
