An approximation method is described for treating spin-orbit potentials in the optical model. The method nuclei has a strength proportional to the first moment I/sub 1/ of the potential xi . The value of It has been obtained from the experimental data for heavy nuclei by BlinStoyle, and it is I/sub 1/ = Mev f/sup 5/, (f = 10/sup -13/ cm). For the two particle spin orbit potential of Gammel and Thaler, li is given by I/sub 1/ =-9.44 Mev f/sup 5/. For the two particle spin orbit potential of Signell and Marshak, I/sub 1/ has the value I/ sub 1/ = -252 Mev f/sup 5/. While neither potential gives the experimental value of I/sub 1/, the potential of Signell and Marshak gives at least the correct order of magnitude for the spin orbit coupling force required by the nuclear shell model.
