STUDY OF CONSERVATION LAWS IN THE PI-MU-ELECTRON DECAY CHAIN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4285929
The conservation laws in weak interactions are investigated through a study of the asymmetry in the angular distribution of the beta decay of mu / sup +/ obtained from the decay of pi mesons. The large front-to-back asymmetry observed proves that parity is not conserved in both pi and mu decays and shows that charge conjugation is also not conserved. The magnetic moment of mu was obtained and the g-factor found to be g = 2.06 plus or minus 0.15. The energy dependence of the asymmetry is studied, and the results are compared with the predictions of the two component neutrino theory. Finally, a beam of polarized mu mesons is used fur the study of the depolarizing effect of various materials. (auth)
