HY-130 steel is a 5Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel typically containing 0.10 to 0.12% carbon with a minimum yield strength of 130 ksi and other physical and chemical properties specified in MIL-S-24371B(SH). At the typical carbon content, HY-1 30 steel must be preheated to avoid heat-affected zone (HAZ) cracking during welding, a costly and difficult-to-control field-fabrication practice. This program was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of eliminating the necessity of preheating by reducing the carbon content to 0.04 to 0.07% and offsetting the loss in hardenability and strength by a minor adjustment in alloy content and by controlled rolling and direct quenching (CRDQ) the plate. The results indicated that compared with conventional rolling, air-cooling and off-line heat treatment (HRAQ), CRDQ processing increased the yield strength of 1-in.-thick plate by an average of 15 ksi and 2-in.-thick plate by an average of 9 ksi but with some loss in toughness. The results indicate that HY-130 steel containing 0.05 to 0.08% carbon within the other specified composition limits can be welded without the other specified composition limits can be welded without preheat and can be produced by HRAQ or CRDQ processing in 1-in.-thick plates and by CRDQ processing in 2-in.-thick plates. Preliminary studies suggest that controlled rolling, air cooling and off-line heat treatment (CRAQ) may be an even better method for processing low-carbon HY-130 steel.
