On $mu$-Mesonic Fission; O DELENII YADER $mu$ MEZONOM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4284524
The possibility of nuclear fission as the result of mu -meson non- radiative transition from the 2p into the 1s state in mesonic atoms is considered. As a result of such transition the nucleus is excited. The energy of excitation is equal to the difference in the energy of the levels mentioned. For nuclei of the uranium region, this transition energy exceeds the fission barrier by a value of the order of 1 Mev. The probability of nonradiative nuclear excited is evaluated with regard to the probability of gamma emission. This ratio is found proportional to the electrical dipole component of photoeffect cross section. The possibility of mu -meson fission catalysis is discussed as well. (auth)
