NITROGEN-INDUCED NUCLEAR REACTIONS IN POTASSIUM

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Excitation functions were measured for the preduction of Fe/sup 53/, Fe/ sup 52/, Mn/sup 52/, Mn/sup 52m/ Mn/sup 51, Cr/sup 49/, V /sup 48/, V/sup 47/, and Ti/sup 45/ from the nitrogen bombardment of potassium in its normal isotopic mixture. The method used was activation of thick targets of KBr followed by chemical separations and absolute beta-counting. The cross sections at 27.5 Mev range from 0.14 mb for Fe/sup 52/to 8.3 mb for Mn/sup 51/. The relation of the Mn/sup 52/: Cr/sup 49/: Fe/sup 52/ ratio to the odd-evea effect in the nuclear level density is discussed. The total cross section for formation of the compound nucleus was estimated at several energies. The fraction of this total accounted for by oae-particle emissions from the compound nucleus is surprisingly large. (auth)
