THE PHYSICAL METALLURGY OF PLUTONIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4283031

Some physical properties of plutonium were redetermined using high- purity metal, including transition temperatures by thermal analysis and dilatometry, expansion coefficients, and thermo-electric power. Thermal properties and the kinetics of the alpha in equilibrium BETA transformation were studied on metal of lower purity. The effect of aluminum additions on the negative expansion coefficient of the delta-phase was studied over the range 30 to 600 deg C. Partial or complete phase diagrams are presented for the alloy systems of plutonium with aluminum, iron, thorium, uranium, zirconium, and ternary uranium --molybdenum --plutonium alloys. (auth)
