First report on the activities of the agency [European Nuclear Energy Agency] presented to the consultative assembly of the Council of Europe

The general organization and initial activities of the European Nuclear Energy Agency are reviewed for the six months, period starting with the official creation of the Agency. Activities include a survey of methods for European cooperation in the field of experimental and prototype reactors, the organization of the Eurochemic Company for the chemical processing of irradiated fuels, enactment of an agreement for the joint operation of the Norwegian boiling water reactor, a survey of the possibilities of producing heavy water in Iceland, proposals for liberalizing international trade in nuclear materials, a survey of existing training facilities in Europe, the drafting of basic health standards for all European countries, drafting an agreement on the liabilities of operators of nuclear plants, the formation of estimates of the production and requirements of Europe in energy during the next few years, and arranging a European conference for the Spring of 1959 to discuss industrial prospects in the field of nuclear energy.
