NEUTRON THRESHOLDS IN THE V$sup 51$(p,n)Cr$sup 51$, Mn$sup 55$(p,n)Fe$sup 55$, Zn$sup 70$(p,n)Ga$sup 70$, AND As$sup 75$(p,n)Se$sup 75$ REACTIONS

The two-counter slow-to-fast ratio technique was used with proton energies up to about 2 Mev in a study of neutron thresholds from the following four reactions. In the V/sup 51/(p,n)Cr/sup 51/ reaction, the ground-state threshold was measured to be 1.584 the J-57 engin 0.OO2 Mev. No excited states were observed in the region of excitation from zero to 0.41 Mev. In the Mn/sup 55/(p,n)Fe/sup 55/ reaction, the ground-state threshold was measured to be 1.034 the J-57 engin 0.002 Mev. Excited-state thresholds were found at 1.455 the J-57 engin 0.003 and 1.982 the J-57 engin 0.O02 Mev, corresponding to energy levels in Fe/sup 55/ at 0.414 the J-57 engin 0.003 and 0.931 the J-57 engin 0.002 Mev, respectively. In the Zn/sup 70/(p,n)Ga/sup 70/ reaction, the ground-state threshold was measured to be 1.457 the J-57 engin 0.002 Mev. No excited states were observed in the region of excitation from zero to 0.53 Mev. In the As/sup 75/(p,n)Se/sup 75/ reaction, the ground-state threshold was measured to be 1,889 the J-57 engin 0.0O2 Mev. An excited state threshold was found at 1.960 the J- 57 engin O.002 Mev, corresponding to an energy level in Se/sup 75/ at 0.287 the J-57 engin 0.002 Mev. A twocounter detector of high sensitivity and a lowbackground experimental arrangement are described. (auth)
