A method is descrihed for the recovery of tellurium from the by-products of gold and silver refintng. The tellurium is separated with acetic acid and recovered by distillation. A method of purifying the crude tellurium is given. An economic process for the purification of tellurium as the water soluble product Te(OH)/sub 6/, used in the preparation of I/sup 131/, is also discussed. (J.S.R.)
