MINERALOGICAL STUDIES RELATED TO THE URANIUM RECOVERY AND EXTRACTION PROCESSES PRACTISED ON THE WITWATERSRAND WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ACID LEACHING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4281801
The Witwatersrand gold--uranium ores consist of a compact metamorphosed quartz-pebble conglomerate, the uranium being situated in a fine-grained matrix composed of quartz and phyllosilicates. Uraninite and thucbolite are the principal uraniferous minerals, and because of their occurrence in small grains and their brittle nature, direct physical concentration is not efficient. Gravity and electro-magnetic concentration procedures useful in connection with these ores are described. Commercial uranium extraction is accomplished by leaching the ore with a solution composed of sulfuric acid and manganese dioxide in the presence of ferric sulfate. Recoveries of abovt 80% of the uranium contained in the ore are achieved. (J.R.D.)
