RECENTLY DEVELOPED PROCESSES FOR THE EXTRACTION AND PURIFICATION OF THORIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4281763

Two processes of thorium extraction are based on the sulfuric acid breakdown of monazite, followed by selective precipitation of thorium oxalate or by adsorption on cellulose phosphate. A third process involves the pretreatment of rock monazite with dilute acid to render it more amenable to subsequent alkali breakdown. Two new source materials are available: Nigerian thorite ore, consisting mainly of thorium and zirconium silicates, and the barren liquors from several of the Canadian uranium extraction plants. New methods of ore breakdown and initial purification are described, excluding the final TBP extraction step. (W.D.M.)
